I take design pretty seriously, but don't take myself seriously at all. I've been in the design world for as long as I can remember, but paid for it since 2001. My first piece of design was in first grade - a poem accompanied by a drawing of a man losing his tooth eating a donut. "Don't ever eat a donut if your tooth is really loose..." is how the poem started. If memory serves me right, the poem was written out circling around the drawing of the man. It was all done on the back of some dot matrix paper. The really fun kind with the perforated punch hole edges you can't help but love to peel. This style of cartoon illustration mixed with narrative carried through until.... well I'd be lying if I said I didn't still doodle ridiculous things from time to time in this same vein.
Since those days, I've meandered my way through a variety of design positions - from branding to print to now almost exclusively digital/software experience design. The constant has always been wanting to design "things" that people want but also need. Persuasive utility let's call it.
Things... logos, interfaces, forms, experiences, strategies that aren't about just a trend or decorating a page; but things that give the intended audience a reason to connect beyond the pretty and beyond the functional. Things that leverage the best technology to enable something better, easier and more relevant for a person who we all to often call a USER. Things that brighten someones day, even if its just checking an account balance, or a part of doing their job, or buying tube socks online. Or in my case... buying cat food. There should be a reminder throughout everything digital that behind it are people. People connecting to other people. People helping other people.
Currently, I am an Associate Creative Director at Deloitte Digital in Seattle, WA. I'm also the "competency lead" for design for the office. Which means I work in collaboration with another person in design on hiring, community, staffing, advancing the field ... stuff like that.
Prior to joining Deloitte, I was an Associate Creative Director at isobar designing responsive web experiences primarily. My stint there was short as I was given an opportunity to move to the PNW with Deloitte and could not pass up the opportunity to live somewhere that I'd wanted to live for a long time. Deloitte is great so far but I do really miss the super talented teams I worked with in Chicago at isobar.
Before that... I was an Associate Creative Director at Salesforce.com as a member of Salesforce Services - the consulting arm of the gentle software giant. I helped teams design custom digital experiences built on Salesforce that, in all honesty, look absolutely nothing like the Salesforce most people think of. 100% custom, sometimes B2B, sometimes B2C digital experiences that leverage what the software is great at - DATA. Data is a really cool concept to play with and think about right now. Data is big. How to use all that big data is BIGGER. I can't say I got as close as I would like to the teams thinking about that problem, but every once and a while I would see something amazing from a tinkering inventor type and was WOWed. and reminded how cool data is when you think about what you can do to make it meaningful to people.
